2013 Winners
Captain Melville is the re-invention of a dark inner city nightclub into a restaurant and bar inspired by the ghosts of patrons past. The fit-out is conceptually based on the scene of mass occupation of Australia in the 1850's by immigrants chasing gold in the Australian Gold Rush. Balancing this heritage ideal with a contemporary design and sensitively inserting timber seamlessly into the interior, ensures Captain Melville as a worthy winner. The innovative way of re-cycling and re-imagining timber as something other than its natural form, with the timber evoking an image of layers of gold ingots, is to be applauded.
Commendation: George St Office Fit Out
Architect: Form Follows Function
Location: NSW
The George St Office Fit Out is a clever lesson in adaptive reuse, with the central heritage listed building ‘reborn’ into an attractive and interactive work space. The introduction of timber details against the masonry structure provides a balance between the warm timber and the solid sandstone. The space uses good tonality throughout with rudimentary details working well against the vastness of the space.
