The innovative use of timber ‘block’ cladding makes Stonewood an historically sensitive, site-specific and sustainable response to the unique character of its surrounding context. Informed by the scale and form of a neighbouring 1850’s Georgian cottage, Stonewood uses a unique timber cladding system to reinterpret stretcher-course bluestone of its context, making it a thoughtful contribution to the ongoing narrative of the streetscape.
Commendation: Bayside Residence
Architect: FMD Architects
Location: VIC
The extensive use of internal and external timber finishes in this project references its Bayside location, offering dialogue between the suburban frontage and coastal design approach to the rear. The new extension is completely embellished with timber battens internally and externally which blur the boundaries between the functional and the decorative, as they extend beyond the façade and become shading devices, fences, privacy screens and pergolas. The character of the house changes throughout the day with the sun casting shadows through the battening.
Commendation: Cabin 2
Architect: Maddison Architects
Location: VIC
A self contained retreat to an existing 1960’s log cabin located in bayside Blairgowrie, the site aims to minimise impact and emphasise a feeling of refuge and physical engagement. The structural timber frame is fully exposed both inside and out to convey both a structural and architectural honesty, with timber used as the main material to tie into the vegetation dominating the site.
