Winner: Merricks Equestrian Centre

The judges merited Merricks Equestrian Centre with the Commercial Exterior Award, with the judges stating that the project ‘heroes timber in a stunning way’. The project is also sympathetic to the landscape through its architectural form and use of durable and sustainable materials.

The building was designed to provide a range of different scaled internal spaces that relate externally to the street, park, harbour and main-street. Utilising timber elements, it provided both exterior and interior warmth and character and created a welcoming and familiar atmosphere.

Formally, the building comprises two elements a double height verandah' facing the civic' side of Devonport that is in turn wrapped around the south and east by snug spaces' - smaller, more intimate and quieter zones.
